What is an Emerging Compound or Incidental Contaminants?

These contaminants include – but are not limited to – atenolol (a blood pressure medication), DEET (a pest repellent), metolachlor (an herbicide), naproxen (an NSAID), estrone (an artificial hormone), and bisphenol A (a compound used to make plastic).

These emerging contaminants are not always found in water, but when they are present, it is in concentrations low enough that they are not officially considered a health concern. NSF 401 covers emerging contaminants but not perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). If you seek a filter that reduces PFOA, look for an NSF 53 certification for contaminants with health effects. You should also confirm that the filter specifically reduces PFOA, as an NSF 53 certification may cover various contaminants, like lead, arsenic, and asbestos.
